St. John Eudes
- Prosper of Aquitaine (+c.455), De gratia Dei et libero arbitrio contra Collatorem 22.61

“He [Satan] will set up a counter-Church which will be the ape of the Church because, he the devil, is the ape of God. It will have all the notes and characteristics of the Church, but in reverse and emptied of its divine content. It will be a mystical body of the anti-Christ that will in all externals resemble the mystical body of Christ. In desperate need for God, whom he nevertheless refuses to adore, modern man in his loneliness and frustration will hunger more and more for membership in a community that will give him enlargement of purpose, but at the cost of losing himself in some vague collectivity.”
“Who is going to save our Church? Not our bishops, not our priests and religious. It is up to you, the people. You have the minds, the eyes, and the ears to save the Church. Your mission is to see that your priests act like priests, your bishops act like bishops.”
- Fulton Sheen

"But if, in any layman who is indeed imbued with literature, ignorance of the Latin language, which we can truly call the 'catholic' language, indicates a certain sluggishness in his love toward the Church, how much more fitting it is that each and every cleric should be adequately practiced and skilled in that language!" - Pius XI
"Let us realize that this remark of Cicero (Brutus 37, 140) can be in a certain way referred to [young lay people]: 'It is not so much a matter of distinction to know Latin as it is disgraceful not to know it.'" - St. John Paul II
Grant unto thy Church, we beseech Thee, O merciful God, that She, being gathered together by the Holy Ghost, may be in no wise troubled by attack from her foes. O God, who by sin art offended and by penance pacified, mercifully regard the prayers of Thy people making supplication unto Thee, and turn away the scourges of Thine anger which we deserve for our sins. Almighty and Everlasting God, in whose Hand are the power and the government of every realm: look down upon and help the Christian people that the heathen nations who trust in the fierceness of their own might may be crushed by the power of thine Arm. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, Thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with Thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, world without end. R. Amen.

I’m not much of a baseball fan, but I did like the NY Bombers before they acquired A-Rod. They were real mean and lean back in the ’90’s and what they lacked in talent they made up for with sheer guts and team spirit.
Dis-like of the Yankees is NO vice, Father!

There are not more than 100 people in the world who truly hate the New York Yankees, but there are millions who hate what they perceive to be the New York Yankees.
Or something like that….

Sometimes my dislike for the NY Yankees gets the better of me.
I was a Red Sox fan in the days of Ted Williams, Dom Dimaggio, and Buster Stephens. With respect, Father Z, your dislike for the Yankees — admirable as it is — has not yet had time to mature fully.
I dislike both of those teams.
I admit I am a little fuzzy on your math though. Are you trying to prorate the salaries to the year thus far? You are multiplying by the win percentage though… 61 wins into the 162 game season should give you .377
As of this morning Twins and Yankees have each played 61 games or .377 costing the Twinkies $896,668.62 per win and the Yankees $2,450,405.71 per win.
On the third hand, my beloved Detroit Tigers’ Salary is $95,180,369 They have played 62/162 games which is prorated to 32,599,894.31. Divided by 36 wins gives you 905,552.62 per win.
Henry,
And I will be at the Red Sox/Braves game down Hotlanta way next Tuesday. As a confirmed Bird, I’ll be delighted to see the Beaners tomahawked!
New York Yankees = Most successful team in Baseball history! Of course one dislikes what one envys. ;)
Excuse me, I meant to write envies.
THHHEEEEEEEE Yankees WIIINNNNNNN!
I love John.

Much like our beloved Church! :)
The Yankees rule!
However, someone please take announcers John Sterling, Michael Kay and Susan Waldman!

What a great thing to see baseball as a topic of conversation on this blog again! It somehow stirs the passions in much the same way as, well, the Motu Proprio. A hearty welcome to the much-missed Fr. Selvester, whom I forgive for being a Yankees fan, at least until the Sox play them again. BTW, Henry Edwards, I knew you were a discerning man/fan….
In Christ,
I barely notice baseball except at World Series time, but as a Southerner I have an ingrained suspicion and dislike of anything pertaining to the word “yankees”. So I’ll root for the MN Twins this season in honor of Fr. Z.
(hopes the Twins come from SOUTHERN Minnesota….)
No disrespect to the Twins – but how can you not root for a team named the Angels?
Go Anaheim! We need another World Series trophy to go with our Stanley Cup!

Brian, in Father’s defense, I think you can find scriptural justification for his team. After all, St John’s Gospel (in the Mass of the Second Sunday After Easter) refers to the Apostle St. Thomas, known as “the Twin.â€
In Christ,
Due to the seriousness of the situation, I consulted the catechism:
Mortal sin requires full knowledge, complete consent, and a hatred for the NY Yankees. It presupposes knowledge of the sinful character of the act, of its opposition to God’s law. It also implies a consent sufficiently deliberate to be a personal choice. Feigned ignorance and hardness of heart do not diminish, but rather increase, the voluntary character of a sin.
There it is in black and white, folks
Ahem. Now, let me see. Which baseball team in NYC actually has a winning record?
Hey, I’m just following Church teaching on the matter. :)
I grew up a Yankee fan. In KC we had the old A’s, who were awful, so it was a big deal when the Yankees came to town. Maris, Ford, Kubek, Berra (all Catholic), Mantle, Skowron, Richardson, et al.
But many of us were also St Louis Cardinal fans because the radio broadcast of their games went far beyond St Louis–a good friend grew up in Tennessee listening to the Cardinals.
And they had the best radio broadcast team in history: Jack Buck, Harry Caray, and Joe Garagiola.

Yikes.
Fr. Z:
I’m appalled. I’ve been a fan of yours for years now, only to find out that you are a material heretic…it’s really just too much for one man to handle.
The Yankees are God’s team, the House That Babe Built a virtual cathedral to triumphalism of the saints!
“The Yankees are God’s team”
Fr. Z, are you going to allow this kind of blasphemy on you blog?
Ahh yes, which team has a winning record in NY and just lost a series to the Detroit Tigers who had their young Pitcher Justin Verlander complete a no hitter less than an hour ago…
The Mets had met their match… rather their superior.
The Tigers have a special advantage as manager Jim Leyland’s brother is Fr. Tom Leyland. One major advantage of the Tigers over the Twins is that they play in a real ballpark, not a matchbox football field.
Khaled: Fr. Z, are you going to allow this kind of blasphemy on you blog?
These sad people need our diligent prayer and great compassion.
Funny, no one has yet mentioned “Damn Yankees”.

I have no desire to return to the pre-conciliar, counter reformation spirituality.
Money is not the root of all evil,George Steinbrenner is.
As I have heard Peter Kreeft repeat several times, “The division between good and evil runs through the state of Connecticut.”
I will be at all three Red Sox games in San Diego :)
Is it any wonder the Yankees is a clever anagram for “Ye Snake”
“Which of you fathers, if your son asks to go fishing, would bring him to see a snake instead?
The Duke 11:11
I’m not sure what the Counter Reformation, preconciliar spirituality and scantily clad women at Mass have to do with baseball… or do all conversations get hijacked?
Nonetheless, I think we all should applaud Justin Verlander’s no-hitter last night against the Brewers. The last time the Tigers had a no-hitter was in 1984. And we all know what happened that year…
I don’t really follow baseball much, but if you pushed me I’d have to admit … [sigh] I’m a Texas Rangers fan. :(
(Talk about a waste of money)
Baltimore Orioles fan here; not much to cheer about since the Cal Ripken era, except for the fact that he’ll be inducted into the Hall of Fame this July.
I wish he would buy the team from Peter Angelos…
Tim,
“And we all know what happened that year…”
Yeah, Ronald Reagan was re-elected to in the greatest landslide in American history.
He beat some guy from Minnesota I believe.
He beat some guy from Minnesota I believe.
Now that was just mean.
Father,
Mexican cave crystals?
I guess that means no Motu Proprio again today.
Sigh!
Perhaps someone should ask the Latin American bishops if they would willingly be living somewhere other than LATIN America? [Hat tip to Dan Quayle].
Is it worth asking them (or similarly minded people): what was wrong with the “Pre Vatican II” spirituality? It filled the seminaries, the religious houses and the family dinner table. Where’s the crime?

Sssh! Don’t cloud the issue with facts… ;-)
